USATF Junior Olympics National Championships
Competing at the famous Univeristy of Kansas Rim Rock Farm cross country course, LO's Ali Steinbacher placed 57th in the Young Women's Division with a time of 22:14.75 on Saturday, 12.08.07.
Northwest Region Junior Olympics Championships, Sandy High School, 11.17.07
It might have been in Sandy, but it was much more like Muddy. Washington sent many of its top youth runners to Sandy to compete against their Oregon counterparts for qualifying places for the December 8, National Championships in Lawrence, Kansas.
On a rainy, windy day and on very, very. sloppy course, LOXC's Ali Steinbacher placed 4th among the Young Women's division to easily qualify for a trip to nationals next month.
Washington runners domintated the Young Men's event. LOXC's Chris Caldwell was the first Oregon CC finisher as he placed 14th with a time of 17:43. LO's Alex Martin placed 20th (18:05)and was the final individual qualifer, although both runners had previously decided not to travel to nationals. Laker Paul Hoard ran 19:05 to complete a good harrier season.
Oregon Association State Junior Olympics Championships, Sandy High School, 11.10.07
On a surprisingly sunny day, but on a somewhat muddy and slippery course, some of LOXC's runners continued their 2007 harrier season in the first round of Junior Olympics qualifying.
Chris Caldwell won the Young Men's 5,000 meter competition with a time of 17:08.9, pulling away from Eugene's Alex Jones over the final 1500 meters. Alex Martin finished fourth, after taking a spill on a slippery corner, with a time of 17:44.8. He was joined in the top ten by Paul Hoard (8th/17:57.5) and Sean Johnson (10th/18:11.2).
In the Young Women's event, Lauren Ohlson was second overall with a time of 21:02.6 and Ali Steinbacher ran the only personal record of the day for LOXC as she covered 5K course in 21:19.3 or third place.
Each of these athletes qualified for the Northwest Region JO meet on 11.17.07 at the same Sandy H.S. course.
Earlier in the day, Rachel Menashe placed 28th in the Girls Youth (birth years 1993-94) with a time of 19:38.6 for 4,000 meters. In the Girls Intermediate Division (19:91-92), Kathleen Preston placed 7th (22:43.4) and Erin Yaylali was 8th (23:06.0) to take home "top ten" medals and move on to the Northwest regionals. In the Boys' Intermediate Division Reed Oliver medaled in 8th (19:14.1) and Mitchell Menashe was 11th with a time of 19:40.3. Both move on to the regional competition.
